Corina Corina – vintage classics live on!

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Rachel Simpson Shoes loves to tell you about some of our friends that we make along the way. We came across Corina Corina, a fabulous vintage dress agency in Warwick and asked them a few questions, her’s what they had to say…

Ella Miles, owner of Corina Corina

Ella Miles, owner of Corina Corina

Tell us a bit about your company.
Corina Corina is a vintage and pre-loved designer dress agency in Warwick, where our customers can buy, sell or hire! We launched in the summer of 2009 with our core business of vintage and nearly new designer wear, and we have already had such a great response we’ve been able to launch our diffusion ranges of Reworked Vintage and Made to measure 1940’s reproduction garments.

How did you get into the industry?
I’m a typical recession buster story! Having worked in corporate marketing for 14 years I grabbed the chance of a redundancy package in Feb ’09 in order to start my own business, I’ve always bought and loved second-hand and vintage clothes, and in a way the recession seemed a perfect time to start a business where people can buy smartly, earn cash from their own wardrobes and recycle!

What’s your best seller?
Evening wear is really popular, and now summers on its way everyone is looking for wedding outfits, they are usually virtually unworn too because they are the type of outfit that is only ever worn once or twice! What a waste! So this is a great way to get hold of something a little unique, without laying out a fortune for one occasion, as well as being environmentally friendly. Good quality day wear always goes well and investment handbags never go out of fashion.

Which designer from your industry inspires you and why?
I love Vivienne Westwood, I love her eccentricity and the fact that she’s succeeded just doing what she loves and not trying to force or follow trends; I’m an absolute sucker for prints too and so anything with Celia Birtwell’s touch has my approval.

Celebrity shoppers, anyone we know?
Well considering we’ve been here less than a year we’re not doing badly for a touch of celeb magic, the actress Jane Gurnett (currently on stage in Mamma Mia) pops in now and again for a coffee and huge trying on session, she’s given us the loveliest testimonial for our window too! We’re also making singer songwriter Thea Gilmore a bespoke Reworked Vintage outfit for her forthcoming gig at the Assembly Rooms Leamington, and we were thrilled to bits when we sold a fantastic vintage Gina Frattini dress via our on-line shop to Lily Allen!!

Ella-47What are you looking forward to for the rest of the year? Product launches, travel, shows, exhibitions?
Well it will be Corina Corina’s 1st birthday at the end of June and we don’t need much of an excuse to get the pink champagne out here! Last summer we had some great fun with various charity fashion shows so we’ll be doing more of those but with a little bit more experience this year, and I’m constantly planning incentives and events for my customers, everything from personal styling to dress up parties to vintage tea parties!

Describe your personal fashion style
I love dressing up for a special occasion or a night out, but my every day style is relaxed, kind of quirky classic I guess, and although I love a touch of designer I like to be individual too so lots of my wardrobe pieces are made or found!

What is your biggest fashion faux pas?
Oh gosh, probably something from the 80’s! Although during my early working life I did spend a small fortune on a suit which was probably better on someone twice my age, trying to look professional I probably aged myself 20 years so yes, that could be it! ;-)

Think back to your first ‘shoe’ purchase when you were younger, describe them please
That so easy! I can remember shoes better than teachers from that time! When I was teeny my shoes had to be ‘red and loud’, apparently I used to have to stomp around in them in the shop to make sure they were loud enough before a purchase could me made! When I was finally allowed to buy my own shoes my Dad took one look at my beautiful patent red (never grew out of that one) T-bar winkle-pickers and said ‘You may as well have wrapped the notes around your feet!’ I LOVED those shoes! Haha!

What is your favourite pair of Rachel Simpson shoes?
My all time favourites are ‘Lilly’, beautiful, classic with a little twist, and I can’t resist anything with a bit of lace. And I can’t help but swoon over the new Pearl collection, the Monique shoe boot is to die for!

Laurel Lime – designer with Zing!

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

The brand new Pearl collection of vintage bridal shoes from Rachel Simpson Shoes comes complete with a selection of handmade shoe clips designed exclusively for us by Laurel Lime – a truly talented company that design and create some absolutely stunning bridal jewellery made from delicacies such as freshwater pearls, glass beads and feathers. We caught up with Becky Henderson owner and fabulous designer to find out more about her…

Tell us a bit about your company.
I‘m Becky Henderson, owner of Laurel Lime and Love thy Vintage where I design, make and sell jewellery, having become a professional jewellery designer about 4 yrs ago.

How did you get into the industry?
I’ve always made jewellery, but decided to turn professional when I fell pregnant with my first child. I realised that it was important for me to have a career that I enjoyed and I was in a position at that point to start my own business.

Ellie_1What’s your best seller?
My Love thy Vintage collection is probably my best seller, and I do a lot of bespoke work also. However, I think the ‘Ellie’ Headband is probably the most popular right now.

Which designer from your industry inspires you and why?
That’s a hard one, as I get more inspired by things I see than by people, but I really love Lucy Marshall; their handmade designs and embroidery are just exceptional.

Celebrity shoppers, anyone we know? Who buys your product or who would you love to see wearing (or using) your product?
Hmmm, I think if she were around today, I’d love Audrey Hepburn wearing some of my jewellery – I loved her style and elegance. If it has to be someone from today, then I’d say Sienna Miller with her chic, bohemian style.

What are you looking forward to for the rest of the year? Product launches, travel, shows, exhibitions?
I’m looking forward to launching a new vintage inspired collection for the October National Wedding show, where I am exhibiting, that’s quite exciting for me this year. I’m also over the moon about the response we have received to the new Shoe clip collection that was launched a few weeks ago with Rachel Simpson Shoes.

Describe your personal fashion style
I don’t think I have a style as such. I tend to take pieces from each season that I particularly like and wear items depending on my mood, and that make me feel good.

What is your biggest fashion faux pas?
As a teenager in the 80’s, I would have to say big shoulder pads and a terrible perm.

Think back to your first ‘shoe’ purchase when you were younger, describe them please
I loved them, they were my first pair of fashion shoes that I was allowed. I saved my pennies for them. They were a pair of grey kitten heeled ankle boots. I still have an obsession with boots now!

Camille 166What is your favourite pair of Rachel Simpson shoes?
Returning to my boot obsession, I’d have to say ‘Camille’ from the new Pearl collection. They are gorgeous.

Mad Hatter’s Tea Party

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

Sally & Rachell & Bedazzled Cakes at Grosvenor Casino Broad StreWe were invited to take part in a fun event held at the Grosvenor Casino on Broad Street recently.
Sally & Rachell & Bedazzled Cakes at Grosvenor Casino Broad StreWe went along to showcase our vintage bridal and cocktail collections and sat alongside beautiful head pieces from Sharper Millinery and the most delicious cupcakes from Bedazzled Desserts, who were giving a hands-on demonstration on how to ice a cup cake – needless to say we ended up with more frosting in our mouths and on our hands than on the cake!
We also had some fabulous models strutting their stuff around the venue dressed in simple LBDs but with bold, crazy coloured tights, our beautiful shoes and the amazing couture hats and headpieces.
A fabulous evening and we made some great new friends!

Button it!

Monday, April 12th, 2010

Rachel Simpson Shoes has met some amazing people and companies over the years, all sharing our passion for unique style and design. We came across a fantastic and rather individual bouquet company called Button Moon Bouquets, who makes bespoke bridal bouquets, corsages and buttonholes out of, yes you’ve guessed it… buttons!

What’s more, all the buttons and accessories are vintage, second-hand finds and look absolutely divine in their brand new home as a bride’s everlasting bouquet – definitely not one for tossing over your shoulder at the end of the night!

Button Moon Bouquet
Here’s what owner Ruth Bagnall had to say to us, when we caught up with her:

Tell us a bit about your company
I am very new to the wedding industry, and I only started in December! I am enjoying getting to know what’s what and making lots of new business contacts and friends in the process.
How did you get into the industry?
As many wedding vendors will say, it was after my own wedding – for which I had made my own button bouquet – that I realised I was bitten by the ‘wedding bug’ and wanted to continue in the industry.
What’s your best seller?
Most of my brides go for the teardrop bouquet, in varying colours and styles, as I think it is a classic and elegant shape, and goes well with many dress styles.
Which designer from your industry inspires you?
I love Jenny Packham and Clare Pettibone, as I think both designers have a real vintage glamour to their designs, whilst maintaining their own distinct, modern style. Oh, and Rachel Simpson Shoes too of course!
Who would you love to see using your product?
I’d love for someone like Katy Perry to be seen with one of my designs – her love of vintage inspired clothing combined with her quirky style would really compliment my work, and I’d love to get a first peek at her wedding dress too!
What are you looking forward to for the rest of the year?
2010 is going to be a busy year for Button Moon Bouquet, as it is our first full year in the business. I’m talking to stockists, booking in for the Discover Vintage Wedding Fair in London in November -this will be our first big event, so it’s very exciting! And there is the website, etsy shop, blog, twitter…the list is endless, but very much enjoyable!
Describe your personal fashion style
Unsurprisingly, I love vintage clothing, specifically 1940s and 1950s, and have a large collection of dresses, shoes and handbags. I love to work the whole Stepford Wives meets screen siren look whenever I can! On the other hand, if I’m working in my studio like today, it’s just jeans, 1950s cardigan and leopard print pumps – cute but easy to wear when I’m up to my eyes in buttons and beads!
What is your biggest fashion faux pas?
When I was about 17, I owned a pair of red crushed velvet flares I’d bought in the sale in H&M. I thought I looked great, despite the fact they were a size too small and somewhat ridiculous. It was only when I got comments on the street, did it occur to me there may have been a reason they were in the bargain bin…
Think back to your first ‘shoe’ purchase when you were younger, describe them please
Ooh this is an easy one – I love shoes, so each pair I own has a special place in my heart. My Gran bought my first ‘proper’ shoes for me when I was about 7 after much badgering – my mum refused let me wear them to school, as they were totally inappropriate! They were cream, with a tiny kitten heel and peep toe, with a gold trim and sparkly motif at the front. I LOVED them, but with hindsight, they were maybe a bit grown up for a 7 year old. I mourned the day the heel broke for long long time!
What is your favourite pair of Rachel Simpson shoes?
I adore Mimi – I saw these just before I got married and fell in love, but I’d already bought my shoes and couldn’t justify another pair! I have picked them up and tried them on many times at various bridal fairs, and they are just so soft and delicate – I’m thinking about buying a pair in emerald, as I need more green shoes in my collection!
